Atelier d'entoilage de peintures: Lining Paintings with Acrylics Workshop and Professional Exchange April 28-29, 2025

(description en anglais seulement)

The Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC) is pleased to offer a Continuing Professional Development Workshop on Lining Paintings with Acrylics. We will revisit techniques developed over the past 50 years, discuss current practices, and explore new developments introduced through the Getty’s Conserving Canvas Initiative. Mid-Career conservators will benefit from an exchange of knowledge and new ideas.

Conservators who practice linings often have a preferred and trusted method. We aim to open the discussion to more recent developments to expand our treatment options. Knowledge and practice with innovative techniques is an important strategy to keep treatment skills robust and flexible in the context of adhesive formulation changes, discontinuations, and possible treatment limitations imposed by the physical characteristics of a painting. Acrylic adhesives are an underutilized lining method in the Canadian context and this workshop aims to bridge the gap in knowledge and practice. Through a combination of lectures, discussions and studio work, the following topics will be covered:

  • History and development of cold lining
  • Recent innovations developed through the Getty Conserving Canvas Initiative
  • Various application techniques and material choice explorations
  • Reversibility
  • Criteria for acrylic lining systems

The workshop will be an in-person practical workshop and ideas exchange held in the Paintings Conservation Lab of Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. The workshop is open to Canadian Mid-Career Paintings conservators and space is limited. To register for the workshop please click here.
